Grattan National Endurance – Carney’s Finish 3rd in Class!

After setting the fastest lap for the team during the WERA National Endurance race and solidifying an impressive 3rd place in class, Andy wanted to celebrate a little early before heading out in his last stint.  Joy caught it all on tape.  Andy – what a showoff.

Truth be told, the last hour and twenty minutes of the 6-hour endurance race were pretty exciting.  Dalke Motorsports, Carney Racing and Team Chicago were battling for the final podium spot, all on the same lap after almost five hours of racing.

Quick run down: Carney was a lap down to Team Chicago and Dalke, as Steve (George) was cutting into Team Chicago by 3-4 seconds a lap.  He caught and passed them to put them on the same lap, while Dalke was battling some mechanical issues.  Steve continued pushing, putting a half lap on Team Chicago and handing the bike off to Nik (Von Matt, Mexican National Champ if you recall) with an hour left.  Team Chicago had to pit and Carney Racing quickly moved from 5th up to 3rd with a 1:00 lead.

As the clock ticked down, Team Chicago was gaining as Nik was fighting severe arm pump throughout the entire race.  With 30 minutes to go, the strategy was for a quick rider swap and have Andy finish the race.  No fuel, no shutting the bike off, just get in and get out.  Andy did what I and probably many would have done and wheelied the bike like crazy getting out of the pits, amidst the excitement.  He provided us all with some quality entertainment and then proceeded to solidify their podium finish; a scant 10 seconds ahead of Dalke Motorsports when the checkered flag waived, concluding an intense endurance race.

Congrats to Andy, Steve and Nik.  For coming out just once a year, they put on a great effort and a very solid race with virtually no mistakes.

More news and bits to come from this past weekend at Grattan from both myself and Doug ..
